Board of Trustees

Our Board of Trustees (BOT) are all members of the Scheme and have been independently elected to hold office by you the scheme member. The Board is made up of professionals with the necessary qualifications and expertise to effectively and accurately act on your behalf. The role of the BOT is to govern the management of the Scheme and make sure that your funds and interests are always well looked after, as well as that the financial status of the Scheme remains sound and secure. The Spectramed Board demonstrates the diversity of our membership and are your decision makers.

Steve Thobela

Chairman of the Board of Trustees
Steve Thobela holds a Masters’ degree in Business Administration (MBA) and is the current Deputy CEO of Printing SA, an Industry Trade Organisation responsible for the sustainability of the Printing and Packaging Industry.
 
With a strong mainstream media background, Steve has held executive positions in a range of charity, newspaper and printing institutions, is a Trustee of the South African Typographical Union (SATU) Pension Fund and serves on committees of the FP&M SETA.  He also represents the Printing industry on FESPA (an international technical body for Screen and Digital printing); the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA) and the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI). This valuable experience has prepared him well for his role as Chairman of the Spectramed Board of Trustees.
 
As Chairman, Steve presides over BOT meetings and deploys the resources entrusted to the Scheme in order to protect the interests of members and ensure the sustainability of Spectramed while complying with: the Medical Schemes Act, the requirements of the Office of the Registrar of Medical Schemes and the Scheme Rules.
 
 

Graham Langmead

Trustee, Chairman of the Marketing Committee
Graham Langmead has in excess of 30 years of experience in the branding and printing industry and has served as a board member and partner in several well-known advertising and brand management agencies and served as board member on the AAA (Advertising industry Board), ASA (Board & Chair 1 of the two complaints committees), and SAARF. On leaving the advertising industry he has headed the Print Media SA body on the International Boards of the respective associations as well as the Marketing portfolios of both international representative bodies of the newspaper and magazine industries. 
 
He was involved in the development of the Spectramed brand in the early 2000s and later moved on to consulting to various companies and organisation on brands and branding as well as the marketing related to such brands. Graham presides of the Spectramed Marketing Committee, which provides appropriate advice and recommendations on matters relating to the Brand Marketing strategy as well as the distribution strategy of the Scheme.
 
 

Boniswa Madikizela

Trustee, Audit Risk & Ethics Committee member
Boniswa Madikizela is a Chartered Accountant with over 10 years post article experience. Currently, she is a senior lecturer in the Department of Accountancy at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and a member of management responsible for the Academic Innovation and Benchmarking portfolio within the department. In December 2016, she completed her Masters degree in International Accounting. Prior to joining UJ, she spent majority of her career in the private sector where she has held various board and committee memberships in a range of industries including investment management, housing, medical aid and transportation.
 
As a member of the Audit Risk and Ethics Committee, she assists in overseeing the Scheme’s external Annual Audit with regards to appropriateness, relevance and general efficiency. She further assists the Board of Trustees in its evaluation of the adequacy and efficiency of internal control systems, accounting practices, information systems and auditing processes and makes recommendations to enhance the quality of financial statements and reports of the Scheme
 
 

Benjamin Marx

Trustee, Chairman of Financial and Investment Committee, Audit Risk & Ethics Committee member
Prof. Benjamin Marx, founder of the Corporate Governance Research Group holds several qualifications including DCom (UJ), MCompt (UFS), CA (SA), RAA, ACCA (UK), and serves as the Professor and Head of auditing at The University of Johannesburg.  He has served on various boards and audit committees for many years and has vast experience in the field of auditing and corporate governance. He is also a member of the Association of Black Chartered Accountants of South Africa.
 
Ben presides over the Scheme’s Financial and Investment Committee and also, together with Boniswa Madikizela, oversees the Scheme’s external Annual Audit with regards to appropriateness, relevance and general efficiency, evaluates the adequacy and efficiency of internal control systems, accounting practices, information systems and auditing processes and makes recommendations to enhance the quality of financial statements and reports of the Scheme.
